Percocet, also known by its generic name oxycodone, is a combination of the opioid paracetamol and oxycodone. It is commonly prescribed to alleviate moderate to severe pain. In the United States, Percocet ranked 69th among the most frequently prescribed medications in 2020, with over 10 million patients receiving prescriptions for it.

Precautions to Consider Before Buying Percocet

Before using Percocet, it is important to be aware of certain precautions. If you are allergic to any of its components, including acetaminophen or oxycodone, or if you have severe asthma or a blockage in your stomach or intestines, you should not use this medication. Additionally, inform your doctor if you have a history of breathing problems, sleep apnea, liver disease, drug or alcohol addiction, kidney disease, head injury or seizures, urination problems, or issues with your thyroid, pancreas, or gallbladder.

How to Properly Consume Percocet

To ensure safe consumption of Percocet, follow your physician’s instructions precisely. Adhere to the dosage and duration prescribed and avoid taking larger quantities or using it for a longer period than recommended. Overdosing on Percocet can lead to liver damage or even death. If you feel an increased desire to take more of this medication, inform your doctor immediately.

It is crucial not to share Percocet with others, especially individuals with a history of substance abuse or addiction. Improper use can result in addiction, overdose, or death. Store Percocet securely in a location inaccessible to others. If you require surgery or medical testing, inform your doctor about your Percocet usage. Do not abruptly stop taking Percocet; instead, follow your doctor’s guidance on gradually reducing your dosage. Store the medication in a cool, dry place at room temperature and be vigilant if anyone is misusing it or taking it without a prescription.

Do not keep any leftover opioid medication, as even a single dose can be fatal if used accidentally or improperly. Consult your pharmacist to find a drug take-back disposal program. If such a program is not available, dispose of unused medication by flushing it down the toilet.

Possible Side Effects of Percocet

If you experience an allergic reaction to Percocet, characterized by hives, breathing difficulties, or swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, seek immediate medical assistance. In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a life-threatening skin reaction, even if you have taken it before without any issues. Discontinue use and contact your doctor immediately if you notice skin redness or a spreading rash that leads to blistering and peeling.

Oxycodone can impede or halt your breathing, potentially resulting in death. If someone caring for you observes slow breathing with lengthy pauses, blue-tinted lips, or difficulty waking you, they should administer naloxone and seek emergency medical help. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: labored, shallow, or interrupted breathing during sleep; slow or weak pulse; cold, clammy skin; lightheadedness or feeling like you may faint; weakness, fatigue, fever, unusual bruising or bleeding; confusion or abnormal thoughts or behavior; seizures; urinary problems; symptoms of liver issues such as nausea, upper abdominal pain, fatigue, appetite loss, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes; nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, dizziness, increasing fatigue or weakness; agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, rapid heartbeat, muscle rigidity, twitching, lack of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Older adults, as well as those who are frail, have wasting syndrome, or suffer from chronic respiratory disorders, may be more susceptible to severe breathing difficulties. Prolonged use of opioids may also impair fertility in both men and women, although it is unclear whether these effects are permanent.
